Student Chapter Newsletters
Since my freshman year of college, I have been involved in the Society for Human Resource Management chapter on campus and I was appointed to be the Marketing Coordinator on the executive board during my junior year. This position tasked me with updating our social media presence, sending out weekly chapter emails, and exploring new avenues of organizational promotion. I came up with the idea of sending out monthly chapter newsletters in addition to the weekly emails that were already implemented. This newsletter contained more details about the events we were participating in, more pictures of the chapter, and more opportunities to connect with chapter members. These were also a way to connect to our greater LA-SHRM chapter, which comprises of working HR professionals in the area.
There was much positive feedback regarding the newsletters from our executive board, our members, and our supporting HR professionals. This experience taught me that taking over a position from someone doesn’t mean you have to do it the exact same way they did. For the first semester in this position, I was afraid to branch out and try new avenues of marketing, but once I experimented with the newsletter and took the risk of sending it out to the chapter, I found it to be very well received and inspiring to me.
